Festival of Trees 2010 — Gibson House Museum
Nugget Markets in Woodland is delighted to once again sponsor the Festival of Trees, hosted by the Yolo County Historical Museum and the Gibson House. The museum’s mission is to preserve and protect the historical heritage and culture of Yolo County. Each year, more than 600 students tour the house and grounds, learning about life in early Yolo. The Festival runs Dec. 2, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. (festival Gala) and Dec. 4, 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. (visits with Santa and crafts). For more info, call (530) 666-1045.
American Red Cross Heroes Luncheon 2010
Nugget Markets is a proud sponsor of this year’s Heroes Luncheon for the American Red Cross Yolo County Chapter, Friday, December 3 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Freeborn Hall at UC Davis. Simply Delicious Substitutions
We love baking and receiving cookies, cakes and candies this time of year. But sugar and fat calories can add up quickly as we nibble our way through the holidays. These easy substitutions help trim down those recipes without losing out on taste – enjoy!
- Sugar: Surprisingly, you can reduce the amount of sugar in a recipe by a fourth to a third without noticing a loss in sweetness. Save even more calories with a Splenda Sugar Blend® that measures just like regular sugar (also comes in brown sugar version).
- Heavy cream: For recipes that call for heavy cream, use a 50-50 mix of half-and-half and fat-free evaporated milk and cut fat significantly.
- Sour cream: Substituting plain low-fat yogurt not only cuts fat calories but adds some extra protein to your recipe (try Greek-style yogurt for extra “creaminess” and even more protein.)
- Butter or margarine: Cutting the fat in a recipe by a third saves on calories; just substitute an equal portion (1/3 of amount called for in recipe) with an equal amount of applesauce.
- Egg: Use 2 egg whites or ½ cup egg substitute per egg as a way to reduce cholesterol, which helps those advised by their physician to control their intake.
- Chocolate: Rather than using melted unsweetened or sweetened solid chocolate, substitute half the amount with cocoa powder (2 Tbs = 1 oz. solid) for all the health benefits but no fat.
- Nuts: While nuts have heart-healthy benefits, cutting back on the quantity can spare some calories. Toast nuts in a non-stick skillet or in the oven, let cool and add to recipe. The roasting enhances their nutty flavor.
